SPACEBALLS (1987)

Monday, November 3, 2008

Well, almost everyone in this world (who have connection to TV) know about Star Wars. Force, Lightsaber, Yoda, Darth Vader, etc. But, have you ever heard of Schwartz, Dark Helmet, or Yogurt???
That's what you'll find in Spaceballs. It's a movie written by Mel Brooks. When you see the poster or the cover, you'll feel some familiarity on it. Of course! It's a parody of Star Wars.

The movie tells story about a planet named Spaceballs which have run-out of air. In order to get more air, President Skroob(Mel Brooks) ordered Lord Dark Helmet(Rick Moranis), which is undoubtly a parody of Darth Vader, to steal air from Planet Druidia. In order to steal it, Dark Helmet kidnap the Druish Princess Vespa(Daphne Zuniga) who run from her marriage. To retrieve her, King Roland(Dick Van Patten) hire Captain Lone Starr(Bill Pullman) to get her back, accompanied by his mawg(half-man half-dog) friend, Barf(John Candy).

That's cover the main plot. Not too much tough, we don't want to spill too much. This movie gives us many laughter. It's oftenly breaks the fourth wall and gives us many parody from popular movies, most notably Star Wars. Dark Helmet is a parody of Darth Vader of course. But, in contrast with Darth Vader, he lacks everything that a bad guy need, except the bad itself. Spaceballs also offer many literal jokes. For example, when President Scroob ask Dark Helmet to "comb" the desert, Dark Helmet's men are given combs to comb the desert. That's when his captain say, "Are we being too literal?" to whom Dark Helmet replies,"No, you fool, we're following orders." An example of breaking the fourth wall is on the fighting scene between Lone Starr and Dark Helmet. On that scene Dark Helmet lightsaber slash a film crew to death.

Rick Moranis playing good in this movie. He makes the jokes becomes funnier with his expression. Note that the change of Dark Helmet's voice when his face covered was his idea. Also, I heard that that the scene where Dark Helmet playing his dolls was improvized by him entirely. Don't know whether that true though.

So, this is a generally good movie. If you love comedy, then you love this movie. Spaceballs will offer many path to laugh. If you don't laugh in a scene, don't worry, there are a bunch more scene waiting to make you laugh. Now, I'd say, good job Mel Brooks!!!
